Quercus’s self-titled ECM debut won the album-of-the-year award of the German Record Critics in 2013, was widely praised by the international press, and especially celebrated in Britain where June Tabor has long reigned as “the dark voiced queen of English folk music” (to quote The Times). Folk and jazz and chamber music become one in Quercus’s world, where recontextualizing of material is part of the process, prompting listeners to pay heightened attention even to familiar songs. Nightfall opens with the most famous of farewells in “Auld Lang Syne”, and gently breathes new life into it, leading us into a programme that includes Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice”, the jazz standard “You Don’t Know What Love Is” and the West Side Story ballad “Somewhere”, as well as original compositions by Huw Warren and Iain Ballamy and songs from British folk tradition, in stark and moving new arrangements.

Jazz pianist Gerald Clayton is an adept improviser and composer with a bent toward post-bop and straight-ahead jazz. The son of bassist/bandleader John Clayton, Gerald was born in the Netherlands but grew up in California. On his fourth album, Tributary Tales, pianist and composer Gerald Clayton traces paths of myriad streams — personal, experiential, intangible — that flow into one another, creating a musical narrative greater than the sum of his individual compositions.

Released in 1973, Crystal Silence heralded the beginning of a long and productive association between Gary Burton and Chick Corea, even leading to a Crystal Silence sequel in 2008. The popularity of their collaboration far exceeded expectations for interest in a band consisting solely of piano and vibraphone; in fact Crystal Silence has gone on to become one of the most successful titles in the ECM catalogue.

Hungarian guitarist Ferenc Snétberger leads a trio comprising Swedish double bassist Anders Jormin and American drummer Joey Baron on the warm and involving album Titok. The group’s intensely melodic improvisation draws the listener gently into its sound world, featuring Snétberger’s gracefully flowing guitar framed by an enveloping rhythmic undertow and the highly creative playing of his bandmates. There is soloistic brilliance and high level interaction, the music taking the time it needs to unfold, breathing very naturally. The trio’s compound sound of acoustic nylon string guitar, bass and drums is special: Baron shades and colours the material with great subtlety using brushes, sticks and his hands while the rapport between Snétberger and Jormin is evident from the outset.
