“The energy is rock, the feeling pop, the spirit jazz and the groove implacable – this is the magic formula of authentic soul jazz singer Sandra Nkaké. With magnificent support from a rhythm section recalling the heydays of Stax, plus two poetic reedmen, this album, with compositions and lyrics by Sandra and her close partner, flautist-producer Jî Drû, packs a powerful punch. Old instruments, appealing arrangements, a retro-futurist atmosphere studded with echoes of sixties songs and soundtracks of cult films, a spacey production – everything here conspires to make Nothing For Granted an explosive manifesto where Sandra Nkaké’s rough-hewn voice rings out like a cry of freedom. Sandra Nkaké is a singer-songwriter-composer who has grown up between Yaoundé (Cameroun) and Paris. She was bounced back and forth on a regular basis between two different cultures and climates, and was confronted with mostly opposing social codes. Cinema, literature and music became her primary sources of refuge. Since her first album “Mansaadi” in 2008 Sandra has become known as an artist endowed with an amazing voice of multiple colors: deep and powerful, yet fragile, all at the same time, which more and more listeners come to perceive as a gift. Today Sandra Nkaké presents us with a unique and personal gift, this album “Nothing for Granted” that she has composed and recorded in her own home.”

Dave Holland always described Sam Rivers’ groups as his finishing school. It was Sam who instructed him to play “all the music” – inside, outside, atonal, swing, blues, and all the hues of the jazz and chamber music traditions. By the time of Contrasts, Rivers and Holland had been working together consistently for seven years (with Dave’s Conference of the Birds at the start of the story), a powerhouse combination of multi-reeds and double bass. Of the drummers who passed through the line-up, Thurman Barker was one of the most creative, rippling across drum kit and marimba. Young trombone innovator George Lewis had already worked with Holland and Barker in Anthony Braxton groups. For Contrasts everyone was fired up and ready to play.

In April 2017, Smith and his new quartet went into the studio to record his first acoustic quartet album since 2005. Entitled ‘Embodying the Light’, the album will mark Smith’s 50th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the death of one of his greatest inspirations, John Coltrane.

It features Coltrane compositions including “Naima”, “Dear Lord” and “Resolution” and music associated with Coltrane alongside Smith compositions written in homage to Coltrane.

The group features Smith alongside one of the UK’s leading young piano talents, Peter Johnstone, a former Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year and winner, with the group Square One, of the 2015 Peter Whittingham Jazz Prize. Bassist Calum Gourlay is a young veteran of gigs with Sheila Jordan, Scott Hamilton and The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, and Sebastiaan de Krom has been the drumming powerhouse behind Herbie Hancock and Jamie Cullum.

Smith has been a presence on the world jazz scene since his teenage years. At the age of nineteen he was touring internationally with Gary Burton’s Whiz Kids quintet and three years later he signed to the legendary jazz label Blue Note. He has since gone on to establish and direct the internationally acclaimed Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and he regularly tours the world with Norwegian bass master Arild Andersen’s trio, widely regarded as one of the premier groups working in jazz today.

Description:

Sounds Of Crenshaw Volume 1 is produced by Terrace Martin. As a producer and musician, Terrace Martin understands the pieces of history that MATTER. And he knows the true value of Crenshaw and Slauson in his own evolution and its importance to the world. On Volume 1, he brings together some of The Pollyseeds and distills the seemingly disparate pieces of that history into an instantly recognizable sound. ‘That West Coast Vibe’ is eminent. A great luthier once said ‘It’s simple, I just take a piece of wood and cut away everything that isn’t a guitar’. The Pollyseeds have done just that. Sounds Of Crenshaw Volume 1 is that record that trims the celebrity and the excess, and makes a very clear and simple statement with the sound. Let us hope that whatever gets built on Crenshaw carries the history forward with as much integrity and beauty as The Pollyseeds.

Description:

Anti-Elevator Mission was formed by bassist Danny Zanker for two specific reasons: first, to give him an outlet to play his compositions the way he had always envisioned them, and second, to create music that is as rewarding to listen to as it is to play. This music is intended to bring the best out of the musicians who play it, and asks them to leave no part of themselves behind. The style is basically a mix of straight ahead jazz, Middle Eastern, African, heavy metal, blues and avant garde. It is played by a collection of fearless virtuosos who know how to go on some wild excursions but also how to dig into the emotion and lyricism of the tune at hand. Audiences in New York, Tokyo and several places in between have been awed by this powerful group.

“New York modern jazz up-and-comers Anti-Elevator Mission put a bold first foot forward with their 2007 release Ups and Downs. Fascinating melodic shapes interpreted by a gutsy, confident quartet give hungry listeners plenty to sink their teeth into. Lead by bassist Danny Zanker, Travis Sullivan (alto sax), Eishin Nose (piano), and Yutaka Uchida (drums) maneuver through nine tracks of odd time signatures and edgy harmony. As the band name would imply, this disc tosses a drink in the face of the radio-friendly smooth jazz genre. While the listeners profit from the record’s artistic integrity, there’s precious little ear candy to be found. Even dedicated fans will probably not find themselves humming AEM melodies while strolling the aisles of their local grocery. What Anti-Elevator Mission lacks in accessibility, they certainly make up for in creative composition and emotive performance. Though well-situated inside the boundaries of modern jazz, Ups and Downs is considerably more listenable than most contemporary releases. Though the sax screams, it never throws a tantrum. Bass and drum grooves take the listener out, but never leave them out. As is common for bass-lead ensembles, Anti-Elevator Mission pushes countless boundaries without ever losing its rhythmic and tonal center. Zanker proves himself a formidable bandleader and creative force on AEM’s maiden voyage.”
