Impressions featuring music by Coltrane, Bechet, and D’Rivera, among many others, is an album unlike any other. Organist Jean-Willy Kunz gathered a group of musician-friends from the realms of classical and contemporary music, pop and jazz. They embarked on a musical trip around the world, exploring an original and diverse repertoire of traditional Eastern European dance music, klezmer, and jazz. Listeners will discover a kaleidoscope of fascinating music ranging from Petite fleur by Sidney Bechet, to Impressions by John Coltrane, to Frank Sinatra’s hit Fly Me to the Moon. The organ as it’s never been heard before!

The classically trained pianist Jean-Paul Brodbeck has become a creative epicentre of the Swiss jazz scene and is also looked upon beyond the national borders as one of the most significant voices of contemporary jazz. As a member of diverse groups, Brodbeck has over the years developed his own style of piano playing, deeply rooted in jazz tradition, founded in lyrical Romantic elements, characterized by a sensitive spontaneity and enjoying a high recognition value. In 2007 he gained international recognition with his album Song of Tchaikovsky. Following a period of intense work with various international luminaries such as Johannes Enders, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Billy Hart and Andy Scherrer, and eight releases as band leader, Brodbeck, spurred by the desire to play in an intensely cooperative working band, formed in 2015 his Swiss Trio , consisting of himself, the young bass talent Lukas Traxel and rhythm virtuoso Claudio Strüby, who had already been accompanying Brodbeck for ten years, on the drums. Starting with songs from Brodbeck’s pen, the virtuoso musicians celebrate artistic openness in an urgent ensemble performance that extends the art form of the piano trio in a fresh and contemporary fashion. As Florian Keller states in his liner notes: “The three friends distil their musical essences in active engagement with the fundaments of the jazz tradition and thereby go beyond pure traditionalism with the shimmering pop sensibility of the songs. With their modern, fine-tuned trio sound, they amalgamate centrifugal forces of canonical Romanticism and the Groove of 1970s music into a graceful sound that moves elegantly through varied musical sceneries. This trio is a musical organism, defying the gravitational force of the schematic when it roams weightlessly in the wide open spaces of the balladic, only then to sweep nimbly through hard-edged landscapes of Groove with the same serenity”.

JD Allen – Radio Flyer (2017) [HDTracks 24-88,2]

JD Allen’s previous recording Americana won widespread critical acclaim for it’s ground breaking melodic and harmonic explorations and for its impressive emotional intensity. While that album presented Allen’s ideas with a somewhat contemplative hand, Radio Flyer moves with a more unbridled enthusiasm, testing the possibilities jazz has for individual expressionism and improvisational freedom. With guitarist Liberty Ellman on hand the quartet presents Allen’s seven original compositions bristling with energy while maintaining a cohesive, comprehensive unity of thought and purpose. Radio Flyer exalts in freedom, and does so with the acknowledgment of the dangers. Improvise, Allen and his cohorts insist we all must, but never at the expense of losing the goal. In-the-moment self-expression can be life sustaining, but beauty is not to be its sacrifice.

Jaska Lukkarinen Trio is one of the most creative working groups in the vibrant Finnish jazz scene. Consisting of drummer Jaska Lukkarinen, tenor sax man Jussi Kannaste, and bassist Antti Lötjönen, the members of this long-standing group have experience in celebrated ensembles such as The Five Corners Quintet, Dalindèo, and Verneri Pohjola Quartet, and it’s only fitting that they’re taking a new look at the music of their close collaborator, composer Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen (of Dalindèo and Ricky-Tick Big Band) here. The 4-track set was recorded at Helsinki’s We Jazz Festival where the group performed at the packed club space Dubrovnik (owned by the famed Finnish film auteur Aki Kaurismäki).

Genre: Jazz

Wynton Marsalis, very much in his Miles Davis period, plays quite melodically throughout this ballad-dominated outing with strings. Branford Marsalis (on tenor and soprano), flutist Kent Jordan, pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Jeff Watts are strong assets but it is Wynton’s subtle creativity on such songs as “Stardust,” “When You Wish Upon a Star,” Duke Ellington’s “Melancholia,” and “I’m Confessin’” that makes this recording special. The arrangements by Robert Freedman generally keep the strings from sounding too sticky and Wynton’s tone is consistently beautiful.
